5 Historic Districts of İstanbul

İstanbul is an important city that has hosted many civilizations and cultural heritage throughout history. In every corner of İstanbul, there is a neighborhood bearing historical traces.

İstanbul's historical neighborhoods undoubtedly bear traces from the city's rich past, hosting various cultural heritages. These neighborhoods offer visitors the opportunity to get to know İstanbul's history and culture up close.

Here are those neighborhoods:

Sultanahmet 

Of course, Sultanahmet, which houses many cultural heritages from the Basilica Cistern to the Topkapi Palace, takes the first place. Sultanahmet, an important center during the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, hosts significant historical structures such as Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque), and the Topkapi Palace.

Balat 

Another important historical district is Balat, located in the Fatih district. Balat is situated north of the Fenerbahçe district from the Byzantine period and is famous for its historical houses.

Üsküdar 

When we look to the Anatolian side, Üsküdar emerges as a historical neighborhood. Üsküdar, once an important port city during the Ottoman Empire, is known for its historical mosques, bazaars, and walls. Throughout history, the neighborhood has been a significant cultural and commercial center. Üsküdar's coastline offers one of the most beautiful views in İstanbul.

Beyoğlu 

Turning back to the European side, Beyoğlu hosts the historical Galata Tower and important shopping and entertainment centers like Istiklal Avenue. Beyoğlu, which remains a preference for many tourists today, became an important cultural and artistic center during the late Ottoman Empire and the Republic era.

Kadıköy 

Finally, Kadıköy stands out as one of İstanbul's oldest neighborhoods on the Anatolian side with its streets and various cultural events. Moda Beach, one of Kadıköy's most popular spots, offers a beautiful view of İstanbul.
