What to Pay Attention to in Additional Placement, a New Chance for University Candidates
Guidance Counselor and Altınbaş University Secondary Education Support Unit Coordinator Ertuğrul Tut said, “The vacant quotas stand out as an important option that should be evaluated in line with the goals of the candidates.”
For candidates who cannot enter the department they want in the first placement in their university preferences, the additional placement process offers an important opportunity to get one step closer to their career goals. Guidance Counselor and Altınbaş University Secondary Education Support Unit Coordinator Ertuğrul Tut, who helps candidates by answering frequently wondered questions such as “When do additional preferences start?”, “Who can benefit from additional preferences?” and “What should be considered in additional preferences?”, said, “Vacant quotas stand out as an important option that should be evaluated in line with the goals of the candidates.”
Additional placement procedures, which are an important milestone in the entrance to higher education institutions, enable thousands of students to step into university life every year. As every year, universities have started the additional placement process for the 2024-2025 academic year for the departments that cannot fill their quotas according to the central placement results. Additional placement offers a new opportunity for students who make their preferences and pass a certain score threshold to continue their education. Underlining that this process is of great importance for both universities and students, Guidance Counselor and Altınbaş University Secondary Education Support Unit Coordinator Ertuğrul Tut gave important advice to candidates who are considering participating in the additional placement.
“This time, scores will be taken into account, not rankings”
Underlining that the guide to be announced by ÖSYM for the additional placement process must be checked first, Ertuğrul Tut said, “The quota information of the universities will be included in this guide. One of the most important issues when making a choice was taking into account the success ranking in the first placement, but the score will be taken into account in the additional placement. In departments with a base score, prospective students can choose programs that are equivalent to or lower than their own score. If the score is not specified opposite the program they will prefer, they can include it in their list without any conditions.”
“Preferences should be ranked according to their order of preference”
Emphasizing that students should make the order that will make them happy while making their preference list, Tut said, “Candidates can sort their preferences according to their order of preference as in the first placement. All preferences on our list should make you happy. Candidates who have been placed in any program in the first placement cannot benefit from the additional placement even if they have not registered. Candidates who did not make a choice in the first placement can benefit from the additional placement right.”
Support should be given and should not leave negative effects on the next processes
Finally, Ertuğrul Tut listed the issues that parents should pay attention to during the additional preference process and said, “Parents should also be careful in this process. Directing the candidate to a field he/she does not want by pressuring him/her or ignoring the candidate's wishes will negatively affect his/her exam motivation or student life a year later. It is very important that they respect the candidate's decision by supporting him/her or providing different perspectives. Again, in this process, seeing the universities and departments that we will include in our preference list on site and getting information will prevent a negative surprise.”
