Cooperation Protocol Signed to Prevent Domestic Violence in Bağcılar
Bağcılar District Governorship, Bağcılar Municipality and Altınbaş University signed a 'Cooperation protocol on preventing domestic violence and strengthening the family'.
It is aimed to create a strong family structure with the study in which couples residing in Bağcılar region and married up to 5 years will be interviewed one by one.
The protocol signing ceremony held at Bağcılar District Governor's Office was attended by Bağcılar District Governor Abdullah Uçgun, Bağcılar Mayor Abdullah Özdemir and Altınbaş University Rector Prof. Dr. Çağrı Erhan. In this context; 30 families between the ages of 18-45, residing in Bağcılar, who have been married for 5 years, will be interviewed face to face. The project is a small-scale field research with one-hour interviews with men and women separately. In addition, in this way, marriage problems and dynamics in the district will be learned from their subjects and solutions will be offered to these problems.
It is aimed to have happy, productive families who can communicate
The project, which is expected to last for 1 year, aims to increase the communication and life skills of couples in financial deprivation in marriage, to combat behaviors and root beliefs that pave the way for violence, and to contribute to the transformation of the economic, cultural and social structure in the medium and long term to become happy, productive families that can communicate in a healthy way.
“I hope it will be implemented in many districts after being piloted in our district”
Stating that domestic violence, violence against women and children is constantly on the agenda, Bağcılar District Governor Abdullah Uçgun said, “We will address one of the important problems in our country with our university and municipality. This project is a good project related to the protection of the family, child and woman, which is one of the most important duties of our state. I hope that after it is implemented as a pilot in this district, it will be implemented in many districts. Here we are addressing families where violence has not started. Because once violence starts, it is very difficult to go back. It is important to prevent future violence.”
Mayor Abdullah Özdemir said, “This is a very exemplary work. Hopefully, our district will reach a level that will lead our country with this work. Because our district actually has such a feature. Since its establishment, it has piloted many studies carried out in our country.”
“We set out together by going to the roots of the problem”
Prof. Dr. Çağrı Erhan said the following:
“Human power comes first among the elements of national power. Demographic and human power. When we say human power, we mean social and social stability. The family is the most important component in ensuring this social peace and social stability. If you cannot ensure this peace in the family, if you cannot ensure the social psychological integrity of the children raised in that family, then when they take office at various levels as citizens in the country, they cannot demonstrate the leadership and love of duty expected of them. At the same time, they cannot contribute to social peace and stability. As a result, there is a phenomenon of family insecurity, which is very much in the public opinion as domestic violence, but in fact it is a big security issue that cannot be reduced to these three words. Under the leadership of our district governorship and with the support of our mayor's office, we set out to solve this big problem as much as we can by going to its roots.”
Assoc. Prof. Banu Kavaklı Birdal from Altınbaş University Sociology Department said, “The protocol signed today is actually the beginning of a research project that we have been working on for months.
We are planning a training accompanied by a field study that will increase communication within the family and facilitate conflict prevention by focusing on families in the first five years of marriage. Research shows that the first seven years of a marriage is actually the most critical period. It is very important to overcome those seven years in a healthy way. We thought about what kind of arrangements can be made to ensure that marriages and families are safe, healthy and violence-free places. That is why we chose the first five years. In other words, we wanted to focus on families that are in the process of being established, rather than relationships with very deep-seated, now chronic problems.”
“This kind of work will continue”
Also from the Department of Sociology, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Berna Ekal, also from the Department of Sociology, said:
“It is very important to make such collaborations locally. With the interviews we conduct, we will look at 'what is going well in family communication and where there are problems'. We will have various trainings in this field. This kind of work will continue.”
