Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya: “People over 65 and those with chronic diseases should not neglect their vaccinations”
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued an important global warning for the last months of 2024 and winter 2025. There are two events that change the air temperature, with hot and cold weather affecting our global world. In the summer of 2024, the heat waves brought by El Nino, which marked the hottest summer in Türkiye, will be replaced by La Nina, which is the opposite climate event in the winter months. Altınbaş University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chest Diseases, Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya warned that this will bring freezing temperatures, storms and snowfalls in Türkiye and around the world and will have significant effects on human health.
Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya, stating that Türkiye will also get its share of this climatic change, “We predict that flu and similar diseases, especially in winter, will be prolonged. Our people may be exposed to fever, cough and joint pain more frequently, and the slightest temperature change may cause these complaints to recur and become what is called “chronic flu”.”
Underlining that both influenza and pneumonia are contagious diseases and carry the risk of spreading rapidly in the society, Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya from Altınbaş University stated that these diseases cause very serious problems. Reminding that laborious treatment processes will cause business and financial losses, Özkaya recommended that especially risky citizens, especially those over the age of 65, with chronic diseases, with a history of frequent flu and pneumonia, should get flu and pneumonia vaccinations.
The WMO report points out that the period between October 2024 and February 2025 is critical in terms of global climate. While snowfall is expected to be strong in Türkiye in December and January, a drier and warmer period is predicted in February. Stating that the choice of clothing is also very important in unstable temperatures, Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya said, “Thin or thick sweating clothes will easily lead to the development of pneumonia. Do not wear these, take care not to sweat. Prefer layered clothes that can be worn and removed according to the weather conditions.”
